Chapter 40: Beritoa, the Blacksmith

60th Day in Another World

Two months have passed since I came to another world. I remember when I met Rad and his rabbit tribe just one month ago.

The population of the village has increased dramatically, and the construction of houses has become more efficient, which has made things busier, but the village is still lively and comfortable. Haruka and Akiho are also doing a good job, mainly hunting monsters, and I am thankful that they have valuable skills.

It was under these circumstances that Rad and the others went on their third trading trip. The next time they return, they plan to bring a blacksmith from the city with them. They returned from the city the day before yesterday, and although it was a quick departure again, Rad and his team were exhilarated, saying, “It’s an honorable mission!”

“Hey, chief! We’ve got to keep moving or we’ll never catch up with Sakura-san!”

“Oh sorry, I was just thinking about something.”

“It’s okay to use your head, but you should also move your hands properly.”

Kuh, Touya’s… Ever since he started living with Natsuki, he’s been in high spirits. I really envy him.

The town’s trend has also begun to change, and they are prioritizing the development of trade routes. Tsubaki and three rabbit kin children left to do the farm work, while Rudrug, Natsuki, and the other four were left to build a meeting place and dormitory, with the rest of the team working on the trade routes.

The work by a total of 17 people was progressing at a great speed. Sakura was knocking down trees with water magic, and rabbits were pruning branches. Then Touya, Haruka, and I carried them out one after another.

Following them, Roa’s earth magic was used to dent the soil around the stump and remove the roots. We left the removed roots and branches in the forest as they were and continued onward.

“A big boar is coming from the south!”

When the rabbit man, who was in charge of searching for the boar, sensed the monster, it was knocked down by someone the moment he saw it. No one is afraid of the big boar anymore, in fact, they are even happy to get some meat. The sound of logging and everyone’s presence makes it easy for the monsters to gather. However, we dealt with them without panic and proceeded with the pioneering work.

The next few days, the pioneering progressed smoothly without any particular incidents, and the day of the return of Rad arrived.

The 65th day of living in another world

Today is the second rice harvest day. The pioneering work was interrupted and everyone was harvesting rice. Yesterday, the meeting house was finally completed, so Rudrug and the construction team are working hard harvesting rice together with everyone else.

“Tsubaki, how is the harvest this time?”

“Definitely more than last time! It’s growing well, and we don’t have to worry about any diseases.”

“I know it’s fine, but after hearing what’s going on in the city, I can’t help but wonder.”

“The crop looks perfectly fine. We are going to start growing wheat soon.”

“Oh, that’s exciting. Speaking of which, Tsubaki, you worked in a bakery when you were in Japan, right?”

“Yes, as soon as the wheat is harvested, I’ll give it a try!”

“Speaking of bread, I wonder how they do milling and fermentation in this world? I’ll have to ask Rad to look into that, too.”

As we were harvesting rice while having such a conversation, the carpenter Rudrug approached. His bunny ears were sticking up, like he was hearing something with his enhanced hearing.

“Chief, Rad and the others are coming to the front of the village. The blacksmith is with them.”

“Oh, well, let’s go meet them. We need to talk about the forge and the residence, and Rudrug should come with us.”

“All right, I haven’t seen him for a long time. Good.”

Just as we were arriving at the village boundary, the other side showed up. The trade route had opened up so we could see them from a distance.

“Hey, chief, I’m home!”

“Welcome back, everyone, and rest well when you’re done carrying the goods.”

After saying a few words of thanks to the other rabbits, they entered the village, leaving Rad and one other person behind.

“Village chief, nice to meet you. I’m Beritoa of the Bearman tribe.”

“Thank you for your courtesy, I am the village chief, Keisuke. We welcome you, welcome to Nanashi Village.”

Beritoa of the Bear Tribe was a woman who turned 18 years old this year. She still twitched her bear ears, which looked like they were poking out of her head. She was short and slender, even for a Bear person.

I was told that it depends on the individual and that women are not so stumpy. When I heard the word “blacksmith,” I always thought of dwarves, so I was surprised at the difference in appearance.

(I had no idea she was such a young woman. ……)

“I have heard about you from Uncle Rad. Please make me a member of your village!”

“Of course. I am very grateful to have a blacksmith in our village. It’s quick, but could you try entering this barrier?”

Rad explained the rules of the village. First of all, we will try to get permission to reside in the village and see if we can get in. The other side seemed to be aware of the situation and took a step forward with a determined look on their face.

“Uncle Rad! I made it in!”

She was very happy that she was able to get in safely. Rad nodded and laughed.

“From now on, Beritoa will be a member of the village. I’ll leave the blacksmithing to you.”

“Of course! I’ll do my best!”

“You’ll be able to eat plenty of potatoes every day. Don’t worry.”

“It’s like a  dream to be able to eat them every night, starting today!”

I decided to continue our conversation at the plaza in front of my house.

I’m not going to stand there and talk about it, so I went to the square in front of my house to talk about the rest of it.

“I’m going to give you this for your use in the village!”

Beritoa said, and began to lay out her oversized luggage. I’ve been wondering about this large package ever since she arrived in the village, Inside were shoes, breastplates, and other leather armor, as well as several iron swords.

“Even so, it’s an amazing amount. Did you carry this all by yourself?”

“Yes! I’m confident in my physical strength!”

As one would expect from a bear, she may look small in stature, but she was strong ………Is it the influence of racial traits or skills?

“I’m very happy, but are you sure you want to give so much away?”

“Yes, of course! They wouldn’t sell on the street anyway.””

“I can understand metal things, but can’t you sell leather goods, too?

“Yes, Japanese blacksmithing skills – they are already a foul art! I don’t care if it’s steel or leather.”

“I see. ……i will take it gratefully.”

The Japanese seem to be quite skilled, but they are a pestilence to the craftsmen in town.

After that, we continue to fill in the blanks about blacksmithing-related matters. Beritoa, the bear, is good at working with leather, and she said she could make metal armors if she had the right equipment. It seems that blacksmiths in this world use magic tools to heat metal, and I plan to bring one from the city that I have inherited from my parents.

“Is the catalyst for magic tools still a magic stone? Or is it something else?”

“It is a magic stone. Uncle Rad told me that there are quite a few magic stones stored in the village.”

“Is there a size limit?”

“The bigger the stone, the better the fuel efficiency, but it doesn’t matter if it is small or large.”

The larger the magic stone is, the more concentrated the magic element it contains, according to Beritoa’s explanation. As a result, he told me, the fuel consumption will be higher.

“I wonder if smelting from ore to ingot also uses magic tools. If so, I would like to know how much it is worth.”

“Yes, we use special magic tools to do the smelting work. What do you think the price is?  It’s about the price of a house?”

“Wow, it’s impossible to get it then.”

We don’t have that kind of funds in the village right now. I’d like to do something just to have a vein of ore. ……

“I’m sure it’s not that bad. If it’s used and good, it’s going to be on the market soon. And at a relatively low price.”

“Hmm? Ah, you mean the influence of the Japan trading company?”

“Yes, that’s right.  But because they make it with alchemy magic, ……. The people who used to work there are now being driven into a corner.”

“But it’s not easy to raise the money to buy them.”

While I was fretting over the financing, Rad, who had been listening in silence, made a suggestion.

“Chief, about that. How about doing business with the city’s merchant associations?”

“Do you mean the Japan trading company?”

“No, it’s a store that we’re familiar with. The company asked me to buy everything they could sell, including transportation.”

“Hmm, but I want to postpone revealing the location of the village a little longer.”

“That’s right. That’s why I thought it would be good to take it to the village once and hand it over there–“

I see. In that case, there is a distance from the village, and the possibility of being found is low. The trade route hasn’t advanced to the settlement yet.

“Okay, let’s go with that idea. I want to secure the magic tools for the smelting furnace no matter what.”
